The China's Great Firewall

By January 2003, China had about 2000 bloggers when, without warning, the Chinese government blocked all access to blogspot.com, the server that hosts all blogs registered on blogger.com.......

......China's government likes Wikipedia much less, however. Since October, the internet censors of the ruling Communist party have blocked access to the multi-language US-based encyclopedia along with thousands of other internet websites with content judged politically or socially sensitive. The block on Wikipedia distressed local devotees of a site that had become a rich source of material on everything from science to society.......The Financial Times Limited 2006

..............politically sensitive topics, such as Falun Gong, human rights, democracy, and Taiwan independence, are routinely filtered by this means. A list recently obtained by the China Internet Project in Berkeley found that over 1000 words, including “dictatorship”, “truth”, and “riot police” are automatically banned in China...............

.......................we found more than 50,000 to be inaccessible from at least one point in China on at least one occasion. ............... 18,931 sites were inaccessible from at least two distinct proxy servers within China on at least two distinct days. We conclude that China does indeed block a range of web content beyond that which is sexually explicit. For example, we found blocking of thousands of sites offering information about news, health, education, and entertainment, as well as some 3,284 sites from Taiwan........

............Since 2002, all internet service providers have had to sign a self-censorship pledge before they can operate. Perhaps the most effective component of government control is the “Great Firewall”, which protects the nine gateways connecting China to the global internet. Its main function is to prevent surfers in China from accessing “undesirable” web content.......

Maybe Markas ATM need to re-think about the issuance of PERBAH I and all that using paper. They should do it online using a server in China. So bamboo Inn and Chow Kit and all that will be deleted from the list of banned (OOB) areas.
